I examined the kexts in /System/Library/Extensions/ and AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext and AppleMobileDevice.kext look like they were updated by iTunes 12.5, so maybe Apple broke it again?Ī temporary fix in iTunes 11 was to use a Time Machine backup to manually copy over the old kexts until Apple released a fix. Apple broke (and ultimately fixed) the USB kernel extensions that are upgraded with iTunes. This has happened in the past, with iTunes 11. Looking in the Console log on the Mac I see errors with "appleusb20xhciport" and "usbagent" so I suspect a mac-side USB issue. I've rebooted both the Mac and the iPhone many times. I find that I CAN tether over WiFi and Bluetooth, just not USB. I have an iPhone 6 plus running iOS 10, and I reset the network settings. I'm on a MacBook Pro running 10.11.6 El Capitan and the USB ports work just fine with many other devices. ![]() I tried reinstalling iTunes 12.5.1 from the Apple downloads disk image, but it did not fix. This might have started after the iTunes 12.5 update OR after the iOS 10 update. ![]() ITunes won't even recognize the phone any more, even for charging.
